Gonzales Spartans started the first game of the Art Berlanga era at home vs the Fremont Tigers out of Oakland. The game was hard fought in the beginning with the score 8-7 at the first quarter, with the Spartans striking first. The Tigers showed why they make playoffs every year as their physicality wore down the Spartans. The game slipped out of the Spartans reach early in the second half and ended with a score of 62 – 7. Only varsity played that night, Aug 25, with JV playing away vs Wilcox HS of Santa Clara the following day.
Gonzales JV team played Wilcox High School on Saturday the 26th of August.
Fremont did not have a JV team and Wilcox High needed a frosh soph game so the Spartans made the trip to Santa Clara on a 2 day notice. The team played tough in the heat but the tigers proved to be a little too hard to beat. The contest ended with a score of 15 to 33. JV now sets their site on Coalinga at home next week.
Gonzales High School Spartans had their Jamboree on Friday August 18th, 2017. The scrimmage marked the return of quarterbacks Hernan Mojica and Raul Morales, both of whom had their season cut short last year. The night also marked the first MTAL appearance of Art Berlanga as the Spartan’s head coach.
Gonzales JV Football Team kicked off the season at the South Monterey County Jamboree held at King City High School on Friday August 18, 2017. There were flashes of brilliance as the rust was shaken off, and the team got stronger as the game went on. The team, which is made up of mostly of freshmen, is now focused on cleaning up some mistakes for it’s home game opener next week.
